How to stay active on vacation

First of all, you're on vacation - which means you have an excuse to get out of your usual routine. If your exercise for the day is 20,000 steps of exploring, that's more than enough! Enjoy experiencing a new destination, and don't feel like you HAVE to get a workout in.

If you're like me and travel a lot for work, I try to stay healthy and moving while on the road. Here are my best tips for staying active while traveling.

Take advantage of the hotel gym

It's free, after all! Or at least, included in your hotel stay. If you know you're going to try to get a workout in while staying at a particular property, do your research ahead of time and try to find photos of the onsite gym so you can plan your workout / if you'll need any modifications due to missing equipment.

Hot tip: there are almost always water fountains or dispensers in the gym if you need to fill up your water bottle!

Or, if you're on a cruise, the gyms are usually fully kitted and have AMAZING views. Cruise employees (including performers) use this same gym, so it will usually have no shortage of equipment.

Try something new in the area

Between meetings and business dinners, sometimes I just don't have the spare time to visit the hotel gym every night. In cases like these, I opt for HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workouts to get the most efficient workout in the least amount of time.

This is the HYLO location I visited in South Carolina!

There are lots of local gyms that offer this kind of workout, and it's a great excuse to try new things. On a recent trip to Charleston, SC, I tried out a HIIT workout at a gym called HYLO, which offered both high-intensity and intensity workouts. The "HY" workout was very similar to OrangeTheory, except you were on a spin bike instead of a treadmill. Similarly, while in Tampa, FL, I tried out my first Barry's Bootcamp class!

If low-intensity workouts are more your thing, there are plenty of yoga and pilates studios around to try out. Trying out a gym in the area is a great way to experience a new city like a local, too.

Pack resistance bands

If you're not sure what the hotel gym is able to provide or just prefer to stay in your room, resistance bands are lightweight pieces to bring along that ensure you can get a good workout in. They don't take up a lot of space and can be thrown into your carry on. They're very versatile and can help you get a full-body workout in from the comfort of your hotel room.

Get out and explore!

I mentioned this before, but if you're on vacation in a new city, I hope your priority is to get out and explore! In Japan and around Europe, I regularly clocked 20,000 steps a day, and was out moving from morning to evening. This is so much great movement, that even if you're not weightlifting or doing your typical workouts, you're still being physically active AND experiencing a new place.
