Visiting TeamLab Borderless Tokyo

TeamLab Borderless in Tokyo is what put the TeamLab group on the map for art installations, and for good reason! This immersive art experience is a must when visiting Tokyo, but that means it is going to be popular.

I've been meaning to visit the TeamLab Borderless attraction forever since I didn't make it my first time in Japan; it was closed for maintenance the following year, then COVID hit, and lastly, they moved from Odaiba to Azabudai Hills. Here's how my visit went!

Ticket reservations are available online through the TeamLab site, and typically open 2-3 months in advance. Once reservations are open, definitely reserve your tickets as soon as you know when you want to go. Tickets will sell out quick, especially in the summer or peak season months. Once purchased, tickets for the entire group will be emailed to you. If your plans change, you can edit your ticket date up until the day of your reserved date/time.

I reserved my group's tickets for 9AM (when they open). This was KEY to getting amazing photos with very few people. I didn't have to wait for a photo in the "Rock where people gather" room's prime spot (cover image). When we walked back through the room to exit, there was a line.

TeamLab Borderless is located in the basement of Azabudai Hills. This glitzy new building is in the Minato Ward near Tokyo Tower. To get here, we took the train to the Toranomon Hills Station, which is a 10 minute walk away from Azabudai Hills.

We were staying in Kanda, so it took us about 35 minutes to get to the building. We left 45 minutes early just to be safe, and we needed the extra time since it took a bit to find signage for Teamlab inside the building.

After walking under the cool Teamlabs optical illusion, there are QR-code scanning gates and employees to assist with entry. For our ticket time of 9AM, there were only a few groups ahead of us.

Don't forget to screenshot your ticket's QR code or have data on your phone to be able to scan for entry. I always carry a battery pack so my phone doesn't die. There were lockers available for backpacks and stroller parking. I was able to bring my purse inside with me.

I'll try not to spoil too many rooms, but in short the TeamLab Borderless experience was amazing. The exhibits ranged from feeling ethereal to otherworldly. TeamLab employees will tell you that there is no map by design; it's part of the experience to get kind of lost and just stumble upon a new room.

Crystal World room

Sadly, the "Light Sculpture" room was closed for maintenance during my visit in Nov 2024, and it looks like it's closed indefinitely. However, there are still plenty of amazing rooms to experience. The highlights and most popular photo rooms are probably the "Bubble Universe" and "Crystal World", although TeamLab Planets has a similar room to the latter.

TeamLab Sketch Ocean room

At the TeamLab Borderless location, there's a cool room called Sketch Ocean, where you can create your own sea creature with provided templates and crayons. An employee will then scan your design into the room and exhibit, so you can watch it swim around.

This room is popular, especially with kids. We waited in line for a little less than 10 minutes to be able to draw.

Teamlab Borderless has a Tea Room experience towards the end of the exhibits. If you have time for a sip, I recommend participating at least once! Do note that everyone has to order at least one thing. We ordered the gelato and tea combo for 1300 yen, or about $8.50. The blooming flowers continue as long as you have tea/gelato, and will follow your cup around.

Our group of 4 made it through in a little over 2 and half hours(!) and it was a great way to start the day moving + in the Toranomon Hills area. We grabbed soba from Soba & Co. nearby for lunch.

Overall, TeamLab Borderless in Tokyo was a a super cool and immersive art experience. I am glad I finally had a chance to visit after wanting to for for nearly 7 years!
