Pet travel must haves

Between road trips and plane rides, here are some dog must-haves for travel. These items are tried and tested; I used them and they performed wonderfully on my pup's recent trip to Hawaii.

Your pet's carrier is going to be integral on your travel day. You want it to be quality; comfortable for your pet to cruise around in & airline compliant to fit underneath seats.

Useful features to look for in a pet carrier:

  • Pockets (lots of pockets)
  • Multiple handles - to carry by hand or on your shoulder with a strap
  • Luggage sleeve/strap - so it doesn't fall off your suitcase
  • Adequate size for your pet (and maybe a blanket/toy)
  • Good ventilation for your pet's comfort
For our travels, we used the Wild One Pet Carrier in black. It had plenty of pockets to hold my dog's paperwork, her anxiety medicine, wipes, and extra food. It also had a luggage sleeve that doubled as a zippered pocket for bonus storage. It fit well under a Hawaiian Airlines seat. I was able to fit a thin blanket and squeaky toy with my 7lb pomchi.

I like that it comes with a removable, cushioned pad to keep my dog comfortable. It can zip open completely on the sides to become a bed while you're out and about. The shoulder strap can double as a leash in a pinch. This came in handy when we visited the pet relief area before takeoff, and I had packed my dog's leash in my carry on by accident.

The only thing I don't like is that the top part tends to collapse in if you have either side zipped open to let your pet in and out. We avoided this by removing her from the top instead.

Here are some pet accessories to ensure your pet travels with comfort:
  • Collapsible bowl: Came in handy for food and water breaks since it packs flat. I clipped it to the outside of my dog's carrier with the included carabiner, so it didn't take up any baggage space.
  • Poop bag holder: Luckily, I didn't need this, but I would much rather have and not need, than need and hot have! The poop bag holder easily looped to attach to the Wild One carrier so it didn't take up any space in our bags.
  • Leash: I accidentally packed this in my carry on, but it was still a must-have for daily walks at our destination. I like the Wild One leash since it can easily be wiped clean. I had no concerns with it breaking since my dog is only 7 pounds and doesn't pull.
  • Dog seat belt: Safety first in car rides! I like this specific dog seat belt since it can either latch in to the car or loop around a seat headrest. The latter is helpful if I'm a passenger and she's sitting in my lap, then we can both be safe. This seatbelt can also double as a backup leash, so it's perfect for keeping in the car.
  • Soft-sided pet carrier: Wait, another one? Personally, I (and my dog) prefer this pet bag for day-to-day travel at home and around our destination. I ordered this to our vacation house rather than packing it in our suitcases, and it worked great for trips to the mall and outdoor dining. It has plenty of pockets and a mesh top that can be zipped shut just in case.

  • Pet water bottle: I didn't carry this on our airplane travel day, but I do carry a water bottle for my dog while running errands. It doesn't leak, and has a drinking bowl built in. This amount of water is adequate for my small dog, but if yours is larger you'll likely want a bigger bottle!
  • Harness or collar: Don't forget your dog's harness or collar so you can attach a leash for adventures. I have ordered engraved pet tags with my contact info from this Amazon shop for peace of mind.
