How I stayed in Tokyo for under $60/night

While the US Dollar is currently favorable compared to the Japanese Yen, I always look for ways to save on my vacations. Here's how I stayed in central Tokyo for only $60 a night (that wasn't a capsule hotel).

The Choice Comfort Hotel Strategy

On a 10-night trip to Tokyo, I stayed at the Choice Comfort Hotel in Kanda for $60 a night. Split between 2 people, that's only $30 per night!

Note, I did not have any Choice Privileges Points before this. So, how did I only spend $60 to stay at a hotel priced at ¥14,286 (~$97 USD) a night? (Sample date searched was Sep 16-23, 2024.)

Comfort Hotel Kanda room priced at  ¥14,286

Answer: I utilized their points sale! Currently, if you buy more than 18,000 Choice Privileges Points, you receive a 30% bonus. (They frequently run points purchase sales, so keep an eye out.)

By purchasing with Choice Privileges Points, the exact same room can be booked for only 8,000 points.

For a 7 night stay, you would need 56,000 Choice Privilege Points. Purchasing during their 30% sale comes to a total of $403.76, which comes out to only $57.68 a night for 2 people!

This is a steal for the location alone, since it's only a few minutes walk from Kanda station, which has service from the Chuo, Ginza, Yamanote, and Keihin-Tohoku lines. Not to mention, breakfast was included at this property!

Looking at other comparable business hotels, nightly rates were around $100. This isn't bad, but who wouldn't want to save 30%?

If you prefer to stay elsewhere...

Don't forget Business hotels

For budgeting overall, business hotels are fantastic ways to save while staying in Japan. As their name suggests, they're typically aimed towards meeting the needs of business travelers. These hotels are usually priced lower than global chains, but still meet your needs while traveling. Some of the amenities Japanese business hotels provide are:

  • Bathrobes and slippers
  • Private bathrooms
  • Twin and Queen/Double bed options
  • Shampoo/conditioner
Some added amenities I've noticed business hotels provide (depending on the chain) are tea & light snacks, hydrating face masks, and bath salts.

On the flip side, business hotel rooms are usually very small (typical for Japan). This is a trade-off for the price, but my husband and I have been able to stay in one for 10 days with strategic suitcase placement!

Some popular Japanese business hotel chains include:
  • APA Hotel
  • Sotetsu Fresa Inn
  • Dormy Inn
  • Daiwa Roynet Hotel
APA Hotel Nihombashi

Be adventurous and try them all!
