How to get through Customs fast(er) in the US

The last thing anyone wants to do after getting off of a long, international flight is wait in another line. Here are tips to get through US Customs quick(er).

Global Entry

You've probably heard of it; Global Entry the most common way to fast track your entry back in to the United States.  You have to apply, interview, and undergo a background check for Global Entry. It seems like a lot, but the hoops are worth it to jump through. Things to know about Global Entry:

  • Costs $100
  • Is good for 5 years
  • Includes TSA pre-check for expedited airport security
  • Fee is often covered by premium travel credit cards
  • You must have Global Entry to be able to use the dedicated lanes (e.g. you can't bring your spouse through if they don't have Global Entry)
Since getting Global Entry, I haven't had to wait any longer than 10 minutes to get through Customs when re-entering the United States, and that was when the kiosks weren't working. Upon reaching customs, you simply scan your passport (or face if the airport has biometric reading) at a Global Entry kiosk and get cleared by a CBP agent.

Considering Global Entry is valid for 5 years, it's so worth it even if you only take 1 international trip a year. On top of it, you get TSA pre-check for your domestic travel.

If you're going to apply, keep in mind that it might take a while for your application to be processed. At the time of this writing, the wait time was 4-6 months.

Also, once you have Global Entry, be sure not to bring fruit or prohibited items across borders. I've heard horror stories about Global Entry being revoked for forgetting about an apple in a bag.

Mobile Passport

If you don't want to pay for Global Entry or don't have enough time for your application to be approved, there's another option to skip the long lines. Mobile Passport Control is an app for phones where travelers can submit their information and customs declaration virtually.

What sets Mobile Passport apart is that if travelers use the app, they don't have to go through the normal customs line; there's a special, dedicated line for Mobile Passport users. (I've seen this line be shorter than Global Entry's!) Moreover, it's FREE, an not limited to just US citizens!

I recommend filling out the Mobile Passport Control forms once you land back in the states and are taxiing to your gate. Then, it's ready to go once you get off the plane.

Important note!

If you have Global Entry but submit the Mobile Passport Control form, you HAVE to follow through and use its dedicated line. You cannot go to the Global Entry kiosks if you submitted a MPC form (the submission is valid for 4 hours). If you're worried about lines, fill out the Mobile Passport form but wait to submit it until you can see which line is shorter (Global Entry vs. Mobile Passport Control).

I've also heard anecdotes about the Mobile Passport Control line being closed, so it's not guaranteed :( It's still a wonderful option to have for free.
